Checkatrade's cited 2026 guide publishes plumber labour at £320-£480 per day or £40-£60 per hour. The range is guidance, not a guarantee of what a specific plumber will charge.

What sits behind the rate

A plumber's on-site time can include diagnosis, isolation, safe draining and refilling, testing and explaining the completed work. The visible repair may be only part of the job. Travel, sourcing compatible parts, tools, insurance and administration also affect what the business needs to charge.

A guide range is most useful when the scope is clear. Compare written quotes that describe the same work rather than comparing one hourly number with an all-in fixed price.

Illustrative calculation

2 days × £320-£480 = £640-£960

This labour-only example multiplies the cited day range by two. It does not include parts, travel, parking, waste, VAT where applicable or unforeseen remedial work.

Regional considerations without invented numbers

No numeric regional plumber dataset is used on this page. Local demand, travel and access can influence real quotes, but an unsupported London or regional uplift would be misleading.

Regional considerations for plumber pricing
AreaFactors worth checkingPractical comparison
LondonParking, congestion, access and travel time can affect attendance.Ask for call-out, parking and travel terms in writing.
South EastRates can differ across commuter towns, coast and rural areas.Compare current quotes within the actual service area.
MidlandsCity work and longer cross-county travel create different costs.Confirm whether mileage or travel time is charged.
NorthLocal availability and journey time can matter more than the regional label.Use the same job description for each quote.
WalesRural distance and parts availability may affect response and cost.Ask about service radius and parts collection.
ScotlandDistance, weather and local availability can vary widely.Seek postcode-specific written terms.

What can move a plumber quote

  • Planned work compared with emergency attendance.
  • Ease of isolating water and accessing the fault.
  • Diagnosis time where the source is not obvious.
  • Parts availability and compatibility with existing systems.
  • Draining, refilling, testing and commissioning.
  • Making good, waste removal, parking and travel.

Business rate does not mean take-home income

A customer-facing plumber rate is not directly comparable with employed pay. Self-employed pricing may need to cover vehicles, fuel, tools, stock, insurance, training, administration, warranty visits, holidays and non-billable gaps between jobs.

Source and methodology

The day and hourly ranges are taken from Checkatrade's 2026 tradespeople cost guide. We show the original range and do not recast it as a Price The Job average.

The worked example is illustrative arithmetic. The regional table is qualitative and makes no claim about a regional price level.
